The Lupinacci family have made The Hermitage an institution on the island of Nevis. I’ve enjoyed their West Indian buffet for years and most people later learn about Friday night pizza night.
The Hermitage is a quiet, village like setting 800 feet above sea-level at the foot of the rain-forest covered mountain, between the two parishes known as Gingerland and Figtree, surrounded by cool mountain breezes and country-side views. The old plantation inn is spread over 5 acres, with pretty gingerbread cottages scattered through lush gardens filled with palms and mango trees.
Richard Lupinacci, who was working in the Caribbean at the time, purchased the house from the descendants of the Pembertons. Vegetation had by that time completely overgrown the Great House. Richard told us how he could barely see anything of the house as he was shown the way in by a local man. Banging on the beams of the Great House, they realised that they were hard as rock, and that the structure was sound.
Offering a truly plantation experience The Hermitage is run jointly by Richard Lupinacci, his son Richie Lupinacci and wife Annie Lupinacci.
Said to be the oldest wooden property in the Caribbean, the Great House of The Hermitage Estate boasts a unique Nevisian heritage. Predating the arrival of the sugar industry in the 17th century, there’s evidence that the estate was established as early as 1640 and most likely cultivated tobacco, ginger, and nutmeg. Built from Lignum Vitae (one of the hardest woods on the planet), the original structure withstood the test of time and despite being abandoned for over 30 years, was lovingly restored by new owners the Lupinacci family who salvaged the then jungle-covered ruin in 1971.
Today The Hermitage offers a charming blend of English elegance and Caribbean character. It’s the perfect country escape for any occasion. Stay in one of the 15 boutique rooms set within reclaimed gingerbread cottages or dine on the colonial porch that is wrapped around the property and boasts idyllic garden and island views. With an emphasis on sourcing local chefs and Nevisian produce, the menu retains a distinctly home-cooked feel yet delivers refined West Indian flavors.
Quick fire questions with owner Richard Lupinacci
What would you recommend to first time diners? Richard says, “Our Wednesday night Caribbean pig roast is legendary across the island and a must for visitors young and old; so too is our rum punch but that is reserved for more mature visitors! Our Nevisian pork rotis are also a hit with diners; delicious flatbreads bursting with Caribbean flavors they offer an authentic taste of the region.”
Tell me something interesting about yourself: “Growing up on the estate I was fortunate enough to be immersed in the Caribbean lifestyle from a young age. Hiking and sailing are two of my biggest passions, and Nevis offers plenty of opportunity for both.”
What is your favorite place or activity on Nevis? “I love being out on the water; the indomitable Nevis Peak is best viewed from out on the ocean.”
